Dressing When You’re Expecting…

When it comes to style, I rely on my friend, fellow mommy, and stylist, Amanda Reno  to keep me current on what’s happening in the world of fashion. She has her finger on its pulse, and always guides me to the perfect choices.

When Bruce and I went to the Vanity Fair Oscar party, I was seven months pregnant with Evelyn. I panicked for a minute, because my first thought was “What the heck am I going to wear?!” Then in the same split second, I remembered ah! Amanda. She will figure this out in no time. And boy did she ever!

She selected the most perfect Dolce & Gabbana dress  for the night. She whipped Bruce together as well. He didn’t look so bad either in his Dolce tux.

I decided to pose a few questions to Amanda about the do’s and don’ts of dressing when you’re expecting…

When it comes to style, I rely on my friend, fellow mommy, and stylist, Amanda Reno...

EW: How do you feel about the pregnancy jean? Do you think it’s worth the investment?

AR: Pregnancy jeans  are wonderful for us denim loving girls! It is always great for women to have the jean option in colder climates as they can pair them with a warm sweater , cardigans , or a basic black blazer .

EW: What are the most common mistakes women make when dressing with their bump?

AR: Too much fabric. The bump becomes hidden and you just look huge. Spandex or anything binding– trying your best not to look uncomfortable is one thing…actually being uncomfortable is another not-so-great option

EW: To buy maternity clothes or not?

AR: I am personally not a fan of maternity clothes. When I am dressing a client who is pregnant, I just go up in size and select things that are comfortable, such as peasant blouses ,   soft tee shirts , and leggings . I prefer lines like Joie , Calypso , American Apparel , Rebecca Taylor , and Isabel Marant . They’re all great.

EW: What are some comfortable but still stylish shoes you can wear on a night on the town when you have given up on your heels?

AR: A pointy-toed flat  can save your life on a night out as a pregnant, chic, mommy! I am also a fan of a great pedicure with a sensible chic flat sandal. Look for one in a fun color, or patent leather. I love any sandals by Marni  for a splurge, or Sam Edelman  for a look for less. A low bootie is always fun with leggings and a blazer for colder climates. Isabel Marant  makes some fabulous ones, or good old Frye boots for a less expensive alternative.

EW: And the always puzzling question. Vertical or horizontal stripe?

AR: I like a horizontal line. Bring on the stripes !
