The Cheat Sheet…

Evelyn is teething and my poor baby is not happy about it. I’m trying to do what I can to make this process as comfortable for her as possible but I still feel it’s not enough, even though I’m pulling out all the stops.

Here’s a few things I’m doing/using:

Hyland’s Baby Teething Gel : I keep this in the fridge so it’s nice and cool when I apply it to her gums.

Boiron Camilia drops : Evelyn opens wide when she see me with the little dropper in hand.

Sophie The Giraffe : When my oldest daughter Mabel was teething she really didn’t go through that hard of a time. Some teeth were harder than others but as a whole she did OK with the process. She couldn’t care less about Sophie. Evelyn on the other hand loves everything about Sophie.

Munchkin Mesh Food Feeder : I add apples as that is a firmer fruit that she can gnaw on.

Frozen wash cloths

Sure, I could Google this question and get all the answers I need (and I have) but sometimes that just feels so stale. So any tips and/or advice from you (in real time) on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

From my home to yours,

Emma xx

Dear Emma.

I am a fist time mom and my five month old boy Tom is teething. Something cold or hard to chew on is always helpful.
Here in Germany we use iris or Violet root. The soft wood of the iris root can be chewed by the baby to relieve irritation of the gums during teething, and accelerate the emergence of the teeth.
With Tom it really works.
Thank you for your ideas!

This is terrific! I will be calling a friend in Germany today and ask her to send it along. Thank you so much for the tip xx

Dear Emma,
I have two girls and like you my first Greta has not had pain during teething, instead the second Viola, that now is 15 months old and is in process of teething, she suffers much and often she gets sick for this! Here in Italy there is the custom to put an amber necklace around the neck of the baby because it seems to relieve the pain! I’m trying this method and it seems to work!
I hope this is for you and especially for Evelyn a valuable help! Love Barbara

I’ve been toying with this idea. I was worried that my 2 year old might try to yank it off her neck :/ but I think this is worth giving a try. Thank you!!! Hope Viola feels better xx

Dear Emma, Sorry to hear Evelyn is having such a tough time. I had a Nuby Softees hand teether for my granddaughter. The fingers have different textures. It was her favorite. Another thing that works really well are chilled baby peeled carrots in the mesh food feeder.

Terrific! Thank you! I’m going to get the carrots ready for tomorrow!! xx

Sophie the Giraffe was my four year-old’s favorite teething toy! My 9 1/2 month old has a tooth that is trying to break through and she is chewing on everything. Nursing her is becoming a bit of a challenge lately! I think the cold washcloths are great for teething. As a periodontist (my second favorite career, the first is being a Mommy!), I really like the different textured teether rings that you can put in the fridge to chill. The different textures feel great on those poor sore little gums and they are not too hard if you just put them in the fridge (I think the freezer is too cold and makes it uncomfortable for them to hold). I believe they even have some that resemble a toothbrush where you can hold it for her. Another trick that I used with my first three was cutting grapes in half, taking the skins off, freezing them, then putting them in the Munchkin mesh food feeder. They stayed nice and cold and firm and I like the safety of the mesh feeders…I just don’t like cleaning them…lol! Hope little Evelyn is feeling better soon! Awesome blog! I enjoy reading your posts and all the helpful comments and suggestions. Moms helping other Moms out is such a great idea!

With my son I remember using washclothes that I would chill in the freezer and wash with hot water and dish soap. I bleached them often to keep them clean as well. I also used my fingers….I have a picture of him in my lap and sucking on my finger… I must have been crazy :). I also used teething rings and kept all the teethers in the fridge or freezer. Today if one of my kids is sick or in pain I try and distract them. Redirecting the brain away from the pain. I dislike using pain releivers unless I have too. I dont want my children as adults reaching for drugs everytime they have a headache or an ache or pain. My daughter will complain from time to time *what sounds like growing pains* and after changing her focus she forgets about it.
Nothing beats the comfort of a loving parent. 🙂

I’m with you on that. I try and use pain relievers as a last resort. Thanks for the tips! xxx

Some of kids when they were teething i would put liquid tylenol on their gums with my finger and that would help or sucking on a washcloth tied at the end with a ice cube in it and their favorite was a toothbursh….just had to put them in the highchair so they wouldnt fall with it in their mouth.

Great tips. Thank you! x

I know this post is a few months old, but I just found your blog. I enjoyed reading the most recent posts, so I kept going…didn’t realize you were Bruce Willis’s wife (not up on stuff like that!) Anyway, regarding teething…I was such a skeptic with the amber teething necklace. I didn’t use them for my first two, but my third baby (born July 2014) was drooling uncontrollably, so I decided to give it a try. Prior to using the necklace, she would go through 8-10 bibs a day from just the drool. The day after I put the necklace on her, we were down to just using bibs for food messes. Her drool decreased by 90% at least. So if you haven’t tried it yet, go for it!!! We bought a certified Baltic amber (dark in color) necklace from Amazon. (I read all the reviews before selecting one.) Good Luck!!
