The holidays don’t disappear with a dementia diagnosis. They change. And while that change can ache, it can also make room for new traditions, softer joy, and connection that still matters deeply.
I wrote this for anyone moving through the season while caring for someone they love and holding a lot at once.

I’m deeply grateful to the @elizabethdolefoundat I’m deeply grateful to the @elizabethdolefoundation for the extraordinary work they do every day in support of military and veteran caregivers, and I’m truly honored to receive the Tom Hanks Caregiver Champion Award. My intention is to continue shining a light on our unsung heroes, to help sound the alarm, and to help move us toward a nation that truly sees and supports every caregiver in the ways they need to thrive.
Thank you to @savannahguthrie for using her national platform to elevate this community, and to Tom Hanks for his longtime, unwavering commitment to caregivers 💙

Meet the Village 💙
This week on the blog, dem Meet the Village 💙
This week on the blog, dementia care expert @teepasnows_pac helps us understand something every care partner (and beyond) should know. There’s not just one kind of dementia.
Alzheimer’s may be the most well-known, but there are over 120 types of dementia, each affecting the brain and behavior in unique ways.
One of the most common questions I get asked is whether Bruce remembers me. My answer, “Yes, he has FTD, not Alzheimer’s.” What I go on to say is that our brains do so much more than just hold memories.
Knowing the differences can change how we support and connect with our loved ones.

A caregiver’s journey is different for everyone, A caregiver’s journey is different for everyone, but one thing I’ve learned is how powerful and valuable it is when we share our stories. When we do, we support the next caregiver who might be feeling lost, alone, or fresh out of ideas.
I’m starting a new community project in hopes it will take flight. For now, it will be a space for me to listen, learn, and begin compiling these important stories.
If you’re caring for someone, or have in the past, I’d be honored to hear from you. You can answer one (or both) of these prompts:

✨ What would you tell your younger caregiving self just starting this journey?
✨ How did you get the support you needed from family and friends?

Email your story to stories@emmahemingwillis.com

It doesn’t need to be long, just reflective. What you choose to share could help another caregiver in more ways than you realize. Everything you send will stay confidential and be read only by me and my team 💙
