What a thrill to be asked back on The Today Show to share my no-fuss DIY Summer Beauty remedies! I love that my DIY beauty hacks have been resonating with you. I truly believe taking care of ourselves does not have to be expensive nor fussy. I also love becoming a little chemist and making my own remedies with a just a few ingredients! You’ll see how easy it can be and how your skin will thank you for it!
Let’s jump right in…
Facial tools are all the rage these days. Have you seen the ones that you can freeze and use to de-puff and energize your skin? I have too and I’ve been intrigued. But here’s another (wallet friendly) idea that is easy to make and will have the same benefits and more!
Here’s what you’ll need:
In a mixing bowl combine all your ingredients then transfer to an ice cube tray and freeze.
Benefits: Toners are great for hydrating and exfoliating the skin. Ice will eliminate puffiness, especially around the eyes, boost skins healthy glow and just cools you down on a hot summer day.
I love cucumbers especially my summer salads. Now you have something to do with your cucumber ends!
Take the ends of your cucumbers that you normally would discard and freeze them! Once frozen you can swipe it all over your face, especially under the eye area. It’s so cooling, hydrating and refreshing!
Benefits: source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Hydrates the eye and reduces inflammation.
I love a refreshing body spray. I’ll take it with me to the beach or on my hikes. It’s also great to cool down the whole family with!
Brew a cup of green tea and reserve ¼ cup. Allow to cool to room temp. Take half a peeled cucumber and puree. Strain and add 2 tablespoons of cucumber juice, 1 tablespoon of Aloe Vera gel and 3 drops of peppermint essential oil into your mixing bowl. Transfer to a spray bottle. Store in the refrigerator and should last a week.
Benefits: Green tea is full of reparative antioxidants great for repairing dry, sun damaged skin. Cucumber is a source of vitamin C, antioxidants and hydration. Aloe Vera has cooling properties and is an anti-inflammatory. The peppermint EO will activate a cooling sensation and overall sense well-being.
You know I’m a huge fan of coconut oil for all its healing properties. So nothing will repair your dry flaky summer skin like coconut oil.
Set your mixing bowl and whisk in the freezer for about 30 mins prior. Remove and add one cup of coconut oil and 10-30 drops of essential oil to your mixing bowl and whisk ingredients until the coconut oil becomes creamy. This will take about 5-8 mins. Transfer to a mason jar.
Benefits: Coconut oil is rich in saturated fat and medium chain fatty acids which helps relieve dry flaky skin. Also can help with eczema and psoriasis.
OR if you can’t be bothered making it, CocoBaba Body Butter Mousse will do the trick!
I know, I know this is going to sound weird and a little gross but it works! My daughters love to swim and that green tinge starts to present itself in the summer months. This is a great, non-chemical way to remove it.
Squeeze a generous amount of ketchup into your hands and coat the hair like you were using conditioner. Clip-up on top of head and cover with a shower cap. Leave on for 30-90 mins, then shampoo and condition as normal. You might need a double shampoo just to remove that ketchup smell.
Why it works: The tomatoes and vinegar that are found in ketchup contain acids that help to neutralize the chemical that bonds to the hair.
